The Initial Assessment

Laser consultant measures a patient's eyeYou will be met by our secretarial staff all of whom are very experienced in the steps you will be following and can help at a moments notice. There is more to surgery than just the doctor, Dr Delaney's assistants in his consulting rooms and in the Laser Centre have also worked with Dr Delaney for many years and give personal care and attention to each patients' particular needs.

Prospective laser vision correction patients are seen at a free assessment session by one of Dr Delaney's laser consultants which takes a minimum of one hour and is performed in the Macquarie Street consulting rooms. The laser consultant will discuss the variety of treatment options in general terms and then you will have your current vision measured. In addition, a thorough and comprehensive assessment with the most advanced equipment available to map the surface of the eye and measure the corneal thickness is carried out.

The result of this 'assessment' sep the most accurate and comprehensive measurement of your eyes using the most up-to-date equipment available. his information allows Dr Delaney to prescribe the best solution from those available (eg. LASIK, ASA (PRK), Cataract surgery, etc) - not just the single technique others may offer.

Consultation Continues

After you have had your initial assessment the second step is to sit down with Dr Delaney and discuss the options available. this can occur at a second visit or, if you prefer, immediately after the initial assessment - but let us know by mentioning you would like to see Dr Delaney when booking your initial assessment. Notice, no treatment is delegated to locums or other practitioners - which may occur in a high volume centre - you get personal and continuing care by Dr Delaney.

Day of Surgery

Dr Delaney operates on a patientYou have had your initial assessment, you've discussed and selected the best option with Dr Delaney it is now time to do the deed. The actual steps taken on the day of surgery vary depending on which treatment best suits your condition. Laser vision correction usually just involves an hour long visit to the Laser Centre. Cataract surgery is done at the Day Surgery Unit of St Vincent's Clinic and from arrival to departure will take approximately four hours and when you have recovered you will be allowed to go home.

In either case it is essential to have someone escort you home after the operation. And, as you can imagine after eye sight surgery, you must not drive.

Post-Operative Attention

You will see Dr Delaney again the following day (much clearer) and again about one week later where he can confirm your progress and discuss any post-operative considerations.

You must be careful for the first week and avoid activities which could introduce foreign material into the eye. Activities such as swimming, gardening, or using makeup are to be avoided. You must also diligently attend all after-surgery appointments to ensure the healing and stabilisation is well monitored.

As with other forms of surgery, recovery is a key component of the treatment process. While you do walk away a few moments after laser vision correction, you are encouraged to take it easy for a few days while very significant healing occurs. Recovery time varies with each procedure, Dr Delaney will advise you what you can expect from your specific treatment. Keep in mind, while you will see improvement almost straight away, it may take several weeks for the vision to fully stabilise.

And Remember . . .

You can call us and discuss your progress at any time!
