Clear Lens

Opaque lens

Cataracts are caused, most commonly, by deterioration of the normal protein structure within the lens of the eye as a person ages. The vast majority of people with cataracts are extremely healthy and have no other eye disease.

However, cataract formation can follow eye injuries, severe glaucoma, general medical conditions such as diabetes, certain drugs and radiation damage.

Rarely, cataracts occur in infants or children as a congenital defect.
